PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE PROJECTS CREATED WITH CLAY PAVERS

We set up the Vande Moortel Clay Paver Awards in order to promote and support unique designs created using clay pavers. Projects which rise to challenges such as sustainability, accessibility and cost efficiency, for example.

It is therefore our belief that high-quality fired clay pavers belong in such environments. That is why we want to draw attention to projects – both large and small, public and private – realised using our pavers and reward the people who designed them.

In 2017, Brickworks Vande Moortel organised the second Vande Moortel Clay Paver Awards. We are proud to announce the winners of the various categories below:

2017 WINNERS

Small projects: For private projects of less than 100 m² using clay pavers

GOLD: BOWLES & WYER WITH A NOTTING HILL GARDEN

Why the design was chosen by the judges: "This English city garden makes the best possible use of the space available. The light grey ‘Salvia’ clay paver makes the garden look bigger. The edging constructed using the ‘Titaan’ clay paver creates a wonderful contrast with a sleek and modern look. This style is continued in the choice of planters and garden furniture. The combination of the clay pavers with the gravel and the stepping stones give this city garden a restful feel."

SILVER: TUINARCHITECTUUR DDS

Why the design was chosen by the judges: “Great attention has been paid to detail in respect of the house and gardens, both in terms of the choice of materials and where they have been used. The successful coordination of materials and plants (gravel, blue limestone, blue-grey SeptimA Taupe clay paver and white flowers) ensures the creation of a beautiful space. The link to this rustic house is formed by the use of the tumbled clay pavers which are also incorporated in a random bond."

Medium and large projects: For private projects of more than 100 m² using clay pavers

GOLD: TUINEN HOORNAERT WITH A SHOW GARDEN FULL OF VARIETY CREATING A HAVEN OF PEACE AND OPENNESS

Why the design was chosen by the judges: “This show garden boasts a variety of materials used in combination with clay pavers as the unifying element. The grey Ancienne Belgique Pearl Grey brings peace to each separate corner of the garden, so that it can be enjoyed all year round. It is not only the versatility of the garden which is striking, but also the way in which it integrates seamlessly with its surroundings and feels so peaceful." SILVER: CREATIEF IN GROEN (JONAS D’HOORE) WITH LANDSCAPED GARDEN IN POPERINGE

Why the design was chosen by the judges: “The objective of getting the garden to blend in with the landscape while retaining the character of the cosy square farmhouse has been achieved. The different levels were emphasised and made a feature of the design but kept restrained and natural due to the brown-black hue of the ‘Lava’ clay paver." BRONS: LSV GARDENS & ASSOCIATES MET VOLPINI TOKEN

Why the design was chosen by the judges: "In this traditional English setting, the warm yellow clay paver forms the perfect transition between the house and the versatile plants within the impressive space which blends into the surrounding landscape."

Contemporary projects: For all modern and contemporary designs using clay pavers.

GOLD: ART&BUILD WITH DOCKS BRUXSEL, A SHOPPING AND LEISURE COMPLEX IN BRUSSELS CLOSE TO THE VAN PRAET BRIDGE

Why the design was chosen by the judges: “The project exudes creativity due to the unique mix of colours of the clay pavers and the various finishes (sanded in outside/mortar joints inside) and bonds. The use of clay pavers inside creates a special feel. The amount of daylight present and the continuation of the paving ensure that when you are inside, you still have the feeling that you are shopping outside." View the full photo report

Public and commercial projects: For all public or publicly accessible projects created using clay pavers

GOLD: JOS VAN DE LINDELOOF WITH DUNEA AND THE MEIJENDEL DUNE LANDSCAPE, THE NETHERLANDS

Why the design was chosen by the judges: "The design makes this unique natural site accessible to the general public. All the facilities for visitors relating to the agricultural and cultural history of this location are located in the centre of the dune landscape. The designer has succeeded in enhancing this extraordinary space in such a way that every visit becomes a special experience."
